Microsoft Authenticator can be used to generate one-time credentials for Microsoft accounts or products. It also works with other sites and products that use 2-factor authentication. www.office.com/setup
In beta form, it was released for the first time in June 2016. It works in the same way that most other apps do. Logging in to an account prompts for you to enter a code. These are the codes that this app generates. This app is great for signing in quickly, as it works across platforms and is faster than text or email codes. The app can be used to sign into your Microsoft account without entering a password. It also supports multi-account compatibility and compatibility with non-Microsoft sites and services.
Access to Microsoft products and websites without the need for a password
Passcodes can be used only once for sites that require two-factor authentication.
Multiple sites and apps can be managed simultaneously.
After you have downloaded the Microsoft Authenticator app to your tablet or smartphone (available on both Android or iOS), you can sign in with your Microsoft account.
How does Microsoft Authenticator function?
It works slightly differently for Microsoft accounts than it does for non-Microsoft ones. The codes found in this app can be used to log into your Microsoft account without entering a password. You must first add the code to your other account types (Facebook or Google) before you can do so. You must log in with your username, password and email address.
Microsoft supports any website that uses the TOTP standard (time-based, one-time password). The software can generate codes indefinitely, which you can use as often as you need. This contrasts with the HOTP standard which only generates one unique code. Microsoft Authenticator does not work with websites that use this approach such as Twitter or, most likely your bank app.
How to use Microsoft Authenticator
It is easy to set up the app. Let’s take a look at setting up your Microsoft account. Download the program and start the tutorial.
Setup Microsoft accounts
Log in to Microsoft Authenticator by opening the app. This is the prompt that you should see when you first open the program. Simply select “Personal account” (or “Work or school account”) to log into your Microsoft account.
After logging in successfully, you must verify the sign-in by entering a code. It can be sent via email, text, or any other method you choose.
It’s that simple! Once you have entered the code, the app will be linked to your Microsoft account. You can use it for sign-ins without a password. The next time you log into the app, simply enter your login information and the generated code.
